The Benefits and Drawbacks of the Weight Loss Drug Phentermine

health dietPhentermine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1959, and became available in the early 1970’s. It is currently being experimented with in combination with other drugs as medication for obesity, but it is still available on its own in most countries.

Before taking Phentermine, the doctor has to be informed of any allergies and medications recently taken, currently taken or that will be taken. The following should be noted: fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, guanethidine, paroxetine, sertraline, insulin medications for weight loss and depression, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors like isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline and tranylcypromine. Conditions such as alcohol use, arteriosclerosis, diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, drug abuse, pregnancy or breast-feeding should also be mentioned. Because of safety issues, older individuals are not usually advised to take this medication. Earlier this year, Phentabz diet pills were released which addresses the short term effectiveness and safety issues of Phentermine.

Phentermine, which comes in the form or tablets and capsules, is taken daily. It can be taken in one dose, 15-37.5 mg either in the morning before breakfast, within 2 hours after breakfast or 10-14 hours before going to bed. It can also be taken three times a day, 8 mg 30 minutes before meals. This medication should not be taken later than 6:00 p.m. to avoid sleep problems. It is usually taken for 3-6 weeks depending on the person’s response to the drug. While some tablets can be crushed and mixed with food, extended-release (long-acting) tablets should not be chewed, crushed or split. This medication should be taken in accordance with the doctor’s prescription and the directions stated on the prescription label. It should not be taken in larger or smaller amounts, and should not be taken longer than recommended. A missed dose should be taken as soon as possible; however, an extra does should not be taken to compensate.

Phentermine may cause the following side effects: constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, headache, hyperactivity, impotence, unpleasant taste, upset stomach and vomiting. A doctor should be informed if the previously mentioned symptoms continue and are severe. A doctor should be contacted immediately if the following side effects are experienced: anxiety, blurred vision, buzzing in the ears, chest pain, confusion, difficulty in movement, dizziness, heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, insomnia, irritability, restlessness, seizure, shortness of breath, swelling of legs and ankles, tremor and unusual thoughts or behavior.

As a precaution, individuals taking Phentermine, which may cause drowsiness, should not operate machinery or a vehicle until the medications effect has been determined. Drinking alcohol may enhance some side effects of this drug. It may impair an individual’s thinking and reactions; therefore, any activity that requires alertness should be avoided or done in caution.

This drug can be addictive, and should therefore not be taken more than instructed by the doctor. Increased hunger or suspected ineffectiveness of the medication should be discussed with the doctor. This medication’s effectiveness is not increased by taking more than the necessary amount and going beyond what is prescribed can cause severe, life-threatening side effects.

In the event of an overdose, emergency help should be called immediately. An overdose may manifest as aggressive, hostile or light-headed feeling, collapsing, cessation of breathing, confusion, convulsions, diarrhea, fainting, hallucinating, irregular heartbeat, nausea, overactive reflexes, panic, rapid breathing, seizure, stomach cramps and vomiting.

The FDA is currently focusing on the new prescription weight loss drug Qnexa which is a combination of Phentermine and Topiramate. Approval was rejected 2 years ago and Vivus has once again reapplied for approval. It remains to be seen as to what the outcome of Qnexa will be and the side effects the prescription drug will produce.
